Shingles is a viral infection that causes a painful rash, which can appear anywhere on your body. It typically appears as a single stripe of blisters wrapping around your torso. Symptoms of Shingles: Tingling or painful sensation in a specific area of skin Headache or general feeling of being unwell A rash usually appears a few days later (in rare cases, pain may occur without a rash) The rash most commonly appears on the chest and tummy but can occur anywhere, including the face, eyes, and genitals. The rash usually affects only one side of the body. A rash on both sides is unlikely to be shingles. If you have symptoms of shingles and are 18 years or older: Try to see a pharmacist within 3 days of the rash appearing. Early treatment with antiviral medicine can speed up recovery and reduce the risk of complications. Pharmacists can provide the same antiviral medications as a GP, along with advice or referrals if needed.
