Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) – What You Need to Know What is RSV? Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common virus that causes coughs and colds. While RSV infections usually clear up on their own, they can sometimes lead to serious illness—especially in babies and older adults. Who’s at Risk? RSV infections are very common—almost all children will have had it at least once by the age of 2. For most, it causes only mild cold-like symptoms. However, some groups are at greater risk of serious illness, including: Babies under 6 months old Young children born prematurely Adults over 75 years Anyone with a weakened immune system or chronic heart/lung conditions People who smoke or babies exposed to tobacco smoke Common Symptoms of RSV Symptoms usually appear a few days after infection. Most people experience: Runny or blocked nose Cough Sneezing Fatigue High temperature (fever) In babies, additional signs may include: Irritability Reduced feeding If the infection becomes more serious (e.g. bronchiolitis or pneumonia), you may notice: Worsening cough Shortness of breath or rapid breathing Difficulty feeding (in babies) Noisy breathing or wheezing Loss of appetite Confusion (in older adults) 📌 Note: Cold-like symptoms are very common in babies and children. Most will recover in a few days, but seek medical advice if you're concerned your child is seriously unwell. Treatment and Care There is currently an RSV vaccine available for those at higher risk. Speak to your pharmacist to find out if you're eligible. In most cases, RSV can be managed at home with: Paracetamol or ibuprofen for fever and discomfort Children’s paracetamol or ibuprofen (check the label for age suitability) Saline nasal drops for blocked noses Plenty of fluids – small, frequent feeds for babies; water or diluted juice for older children Recovery typically takes 1 to 2 weeks. If you suspect RSV and are struggling with symptoms, book a consultation with one of our pharmacists today. We’re here to help.
